Verizon FIOA Set Top Box Return SCAM - Verizon Fios

When we closed our Verizon account in June (due to a move) we were sent a box and a shipping label from Verizon to return our set top boxes. The shipping was required to go through UPS. We did everything we were told, kept our shipment tracking number and moved on with our lives. We paid our final bill without incident. Fast forward to September when we received a bill for over $1000 from a collection agency. No emails and no letters had been sent from Verizon although we had updated our information (we received our last bill in our new home). When my husband FINALLY reached a live person, they very carefully hide their customer service number, they told him "Well Sir, the people at UPS know what is in those boxes and they steal them." Really? The international shipping company you demand we use is ripping you off? Out of frustration and concern for our credit report we paid the $1K bill in October, after making the payment it showed my account as up to date. Fast forward to December we received a bill from a different collection agency for $125. Again, not a single letter or email from Verizon letting us know we owed ANYTHING still. When I researched this agency all reviews screamed scam. So I logged onto our Verizon account and saw we still owed a mystery $62.50. I have paid this fee, through Verizon as all the on-line reviews said to not send money to the collection agency. I am hopeful that I will NEVER hear from Verizon again, but my question is this, how is it okay to run a fear based money collection scheme using fly by night collection agencies when you are this big a corporation? A bad credit rating lives with a person for 7 years! Show your customers some respect and at least try to contact them if you believe or want to scare them into thinking they owe you money. Resorting to collection agencies without any effort on your part to contact the customer is bad form. And if you really believe that UPS is stealing from you, perhaps you should look into a different shipper? (Note to UPS, we have never had anything but A service when we work with you, I feel sorry that your partners at Verizon are throwing you under the bus.)
